Support for pupils with special educational needs and disabilities in England

At January 2019, 1.3 million pupils in England (14.9% of all pupils) were recorded as having special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). A child or young person has special educational needs if they have a learning difficulty or disability which calls for special educational provision to be made for him or her. Pupils with SEND are among the most vulnerable in the school system.   The government substantially changed the system for supporting children and young people with SEND in September 2014, under the Children and Families Act 2014.
